Bring Your Own Key

On Bring Your Own Key (BYOK), Melaa runs on your district's own Anthropic account. Your platform fee is lower, your AI compute is billed to you directly by Anthropic at their rates, and there is no message pool or throttle. Setup takes a few minutes.

How the billing works

You pay Melaa a lower annual platform fee (about a third less than the fully managed plan): the same $500/yr base with no setup fee. You pay Anthropic directly for the compute your teachers use. Many districts have education credits or enterprise pricing that make the compute cost very low. See the numbers for your size on the pricing page.

Step 1 · Create an Anthropic account

  1. Go to the Anthropic Console at console.anthropic.com and sign up with your district email. Verify the email if prompted.
  2. Open Settings → Billing (or Plans & Billing) and add a payment method, or apply your education/organization credits if you have them. A key can't make calls until the account has billing or credits.

Step 2 · Create an API key

  1. In the console, open API Keys and choose Create Key. Give it a name like “Melaa”.
  2. Copy the key immediately. It starts with sk-ant- and Anthropic shows it only once. If you lose it, just create another.

Step 3 · Turn it on in Melaa

  1. In Melaa, go to Settings → AI Billing, paste the key, and choose Validate & save. We confirm the key with a live call, encrypt it at rest, and never show it again.
  2. That's it. Your AI assistant, plans, letters, and materials now run on your Anthropic account, with no message pool or usage cap from Melaa.

Phase 1 is Anthropic (Claude) first. If you already have an Anthropic account, skip to Step 2.

What changes for your data

Under the managed plan, model calls run through IncluSend's Anthropic account, which is covered by our Zero Data Retention agreement. Under BYOK, those calls run through your district's own Anthropic account, under the terms of that account, so your provider becomes your own subprocessor. Melaa still redacts student names before sending context to the model, exactly as on the managed plan. If your district requires a Zero Data Retention or specific data-handling arrangement, set that up on your Anthropic account. See our Data Sharing and Privacy pages.

Good to know

  • Rate limits and quotas are your Anthropic account's. A brand-new key can start with low limits; raise them in your Anthropic console.
  • Phase 1 supports Anthropic (Claude). Support for other providers is planned.
  • You can switch back to fully managed anytime, self-serve, from Settings. We prorate the difference for the rest of your term.
